Parrots Parrots and More Parrots

Parrots are found in most tropical and subtropical regions. The greatest diversity and most recognized parrots are found in South America and Australia.  There are over 400 different species of parrots.  These beautiful intelligent birds have fascinated us for centuries.
One of the most famous Parrots was Dr. Irene Pepperberg's African Grey parrot Alex. Alex has garnered more media coverage than any other parrot in modern history. Alex flew off to birdie heaven on September 6, 2007, at the age of 31. His story is immortalized in Dr. Pepperberg's book, Alex and Me.
As recounted in her book, Alex's last words to Dr. Pepperberg were:
"You be good. I love you," Alex said.
"I love you too."
"You'll be in tomorrow?"
"Yes, I'll be in tomorrow."

Characteristic features of parrots include a strong, curved bill, an upright stance, strong legs, and clawed feet. Many parrots are vividly coloured, and some are multi-coloured. Almost all parrots nest in tree hollows (or nest boxes in captivity), and lays white eggs from which hatch helpless young.

Parrots are considered the smartest birds, and the ability of some species to imitate human voices enhances their popularity as pets. Some parrots can talk at the level of a four-to-five year old human.

They are intelligent beings with feelings and reactions. Some parrots can act like spoiled children when they don’t get their way.  A Parrot can bond with one person in the family and consider that person its mate.

The bigger the parrot the longer its life.  So its not a good idea to bring a feathered friend into your home unless you are ready to have a lifetime companion, who will be part of the family.
